How Many Time Zones in Russia?!

Russia’s huge. Obviously. This question of how many time zones there are in Russia came up at trivia one week. And it was a bit of a head-scratcher. But we finally guessed 11. Which was right! Except not really. Because as it turns out, Russia cut back on its time zones a few years ago. Since 2010, it’s only had 9 time zones.

Here’s a funny story CNN did about it. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be funny. But the video definitely is. I like how one of the objections to the change is that some people will lose the tradition of celebrating New Year’s twice.  Apparently, people in Samara (close to Moscow) ring in the New Year at local time and then again at Moscow time. More reasonable objections to the trimming of time zones follow in the actual article.
